Vijay Likely to Vacate Trichy East Seat After Historic Dual Victory in Tamil Nadu Assembly Election
Actor-politician Vijay is set to resign from the Trichy East Assembly seat after a historic victory in the 2026 Tamil Nadu election. His party TVK won 108 seats, challenging DMK and AIADMK dominance. Vijay retained Perambur and now leads crucial coalition talks to reach majority in the 234-member assembly.
Vijay led TVK to a sweeping victory in its debut election, winning 108 out of 234 seats in the state assembly. The DMK secured 59 seats, while the AIADMK won 47 seats, leaving TVK short of the 118-seat majority mark required to form a government independently. The result has positioned TVK at the center of post-election political negotiations, with potential alliances being explored with the Congress, Left parties, and even the AIADMK.
The actor contested from both Trichy East and Perambur constituencies and emerged victorious in both. In Trichy East, Vijay defeated DMK candidate Inigo Irudayaraj by a margin of 27,416 votes. In Perambur, he registered a more decisive win over DMK candidate R. D. Shekar, securing victory by 53,715 votes.
Perambur, located in northern Chennai, was regarded as a politically sensitive urban stronghold traditionally influenced by the DMK since 2019. Vijay’s decision to contest from this constituency was widely seen as a calculated high-risk move, intended to test the depth of his popularity beyond cinematic influence and into core urban political territory.
Trichy East, representing the eastern region of Tiruchirappalli city, carried different strategic importance. The constituency was chosen to expand TVK’s reach beyond Chennai and counter perceptions that Vijay’s support base was limited to urban fan-driven pockets. His campaign in the region featured large public rallies across commercial and densely populated areas, drawing significant public attention.
With a decisive victory from both constituencies, Vijay has not only secured a strong electoral mandate but also reshaped the political narrative in Tamil Nadu. His performance is being viewed as a direct challenge to the traditional two-party dominance that has defined the state for over six decades. As TVK moves into post-poll negotiations, the party’s next steps are expected to determine whether Vijay transitions from electoral disruptor to chief ministerial contender.
